Values
The Washington quarter is the same Flanagan design on the eagle reverse from 1932 through 1998. The alloy changed in 1965. This page is the clad circulating type. Silver years live on the pre-65 Washington quarter page. This page does not duplicate that mintage or value table.
A clad Washington’s market depends on the date, the mint mark, and the grade. Melt is not a silver conversation here. This page is a series reference, not a price list.
The G, VF, and MS-63 columns sit in the mintage chart below. Those figures are from the NGC US Coin Price Guide, retrieved 2026-08-23. They are a published guide, not an offer and not melt. A blank cell means that grade was not printed in this pass.
A dealer looking at the coin in hand will beat a guide number. If you are trying to sell a pile of them, start with how to sell a coin collection and the Ohio coin dealer directory.
Key Dates
A PCGS article names 1932-D and 1932-S as the twin keys. Those names live on the pre-65 Washington quarter page. This is a name list, not a price list. Do not invent a 1965 key because the alloy changed.
There is no key-date bolding on this clad chart for that reason. A worn clad date is still clad.
No key-date list is printed here yet.
Key date names: NGC Coin Explorer. This is a name list, not a price list.
Errors
These are named type facts. They are not extra invented rows.
Silver versus clad. 1932–1964 is 90 percent silver. Those years live on the pre-65 Washington quarter page. 1965–1998 on this reverse is clad. That is a spec change, not an error and not a key.
1976 Bicentennial reverse. Different reverse. Not a row on this eagle-reverse table.
Later programs. State, Territories, America the Beautiful, and American Women quarters are later separate pages. This page will not duplicate those tables.
Compare the coin in hand to the NGC Coin Explorer Washington page. We do not host their plates.
Varieties
This page is the clad eagle reverse, 1965 through 1998. It does not split into design types. The 1976 drummer reverse is the Bicentennial page. Doubled dies exist. This page does not list every one.
Names follow PCGS CoinFacts and NGC, the same publishers this site already cites. This is a name list, not a price list and not a count.
Mintage
This chart is the clad eagle reverse, 1965 through 1998. Silver 1932–1964 mintages live on the pre-65 Washington quarter page. This page does not duplicate that table.
The counts below are NGC Coin Explorer figures retrieved 2026-08-23. Years NGC left blank stay off. 1976 stays off because that reverse is not the eagle.

This chart is the clad eagle reverse, 1965–1998. Silver 1932–1964 lives on the pre-65 Washington page. 1976 Bicentennial, State, Territories, America the Beautiful, and American Women quarters are not rows here. SMS and junk listings stay off. Years NGC left blank stay off. Guide cells retrieved 2026-08-23.
These are NGC Explorer manufacture figures, not a Red Book net or melt. The grade columns in the same box are NGC guide values from 2026-08-23, not an offer.
Read the date. Read the mint mark. Do not call 1965 a key because it is clad.
Specifications
These are mint specs, not what a dealer pays. Wear can take a little weight off. We will not invent a tolerance.
This page is the clad eagle-reverse Washington. Catalogs also print the silver figures, so both sit in the box. The silver years themselves live on the pre-65 Washington quarter page.
| Specification | Figure |
|---|---|
| Diameter | 24.3 mm |
| Thickness | 1.75 mm |
| Weight | 5.67 g clad 1965–1998 |
| Composition | 1965–1998 is copper-nickel clad copper. 1932–1964 is 90% silver, 10% copper. |
| Fine silver | 0.18084 troy oz (1932–1964 only). Melt math uses this figure. It does not appraise a coin. |
| Edge | Reeded |
| Designer | John Flanagan |
Thickness 1.75 mm is the Numista Washington type-page figure for both alloys (N#54 silver; N#55 clad). This page is the clad eagle reverse, 1965–1998. Clad weight is 5.67 g. Silver 1932–1964 is 6.25 g / .900 fine. Fine silver 0.18084 troy oz is the silver years only. Those silver years live on the pre-65 Washington page. 1976 Bicentennial reverse is not this table.
Grading
A clad Washington quarter wears first on Washington’s hair and cheek, and on the eagle’s breast. This page is the clad eagle reverse, 1965–1998.
1965 is clad, not a key. 1932-D and 1932-S live on the pre-65 Washington page. Later State, Territories, America the Beautiful, and American Women reverses are later pages.
Key Diagnostic Areas
| Area | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Washington’s hair and cheek | The hair above the ear and the cheekbone. | Those high points flatten while the coat can still look busy. |
| Eagle’s breast | The feathers on the center of the eagle. | The breast goes slick first on the eagle reverse. |
| Date and mint mark | The numerals and the mint mark, when there is one. | A worn date is a worn quarter. 1965–1967 circulating coins have no mint mark. |
| Alloy | 1965–1998 on this eagle reverse is copper-nickel clad. Silver 1932–1964 lives on the pre-65 page. | The alloy change is composition, not a key-date story. |
Circulated & Mint State
These cards describe this coin, not a second copy of the P-1 through MS-70 chart. The shared numbers live on the glossary.
See graded photos. The photos that show what VF looks like live at PCGS. We do not host their plates. NGC Coin Explorer is another look if you want a second set. Guide values on this page came from the NGC Price Guide.
What each named grade looks like on this design.
Poor
Poor
A clad quarter you can still name if you already know the type.
- Washington’s hair is gone.
- The eagle’s breast is a lump.
- the date may be a shadow. Shine does not raise this.
AG
About Good
You might read a digit. The high points are already slick.
- Washington’s hair is worn to a blank patch.
- The eagle’s breast is not a conversation yet.
- If you cannot read the date without hoping, stay here.
Good
Good
The date is readable. The design is still mostly an outline.
- Washington’s hair is flat. The portrait is a head, not a face.
- The eagle’s breast is outlined.
- 1965 clad is composition, not a key.
VG
Very Good
The date is clear. A little life returns away from the high points.
- Some leftover detail sits next to washington’s hair.
- The eagle’s breast starts to hint at itself.
- Do not clean the date to “see it better.”
Fine
Fine
You can follow the design. The high points are outlined, not sharp.
- Washington’s hair is outlined and tired.
- The eagle’s breast shows leftover lines, not a full coat.
- the date should be clear.
VF
Very Fine
The design is doing real work. The high points still decide.
- Leftover detail sits in washington’s hair.
- The eagle’s breast has leftover lines. The center is still the worn spot.
- 1965 clad is composition, not a key.
EF
Extremely Fine
Most of the coin looks sharp. The high points tell on it.
- Light wear on washington’s hair and the eagle’s breast.
- Those spots go first. A pretty tone does not hide a flat high point.
- 1965 clad is composition, not a key.
AU
About Uncirculated
Almost no wear — and “almost” lives on the same high points.
- A trace of rub on washington’s hair.
- Luster may still sit in the fields. Rub is still rub.
- 1965 clad is composition, not a key.
Basal MS
Mint State
No wear. The fight is marks and luster, not how white the coin looks.
- No rub on washington’s hair or the eagle’s breast.
- Marks and luster decide how this mint-state coin lives.
- 1965 clad is composition, not a key.
Choice
Choice Mint State
Still no wear. Cleaner fields than basal mint state.
- Same no-wear rule on washington’s hair.
- Fewer marks in the fields. Luster is more intact.
- 1965 clad is composition, not a key.
Gem
Gem Mint State
A clean example of the type. Still mint state, still not a story.
- No wear on washington’s hair or the eagle’s breast.
- Marks and luster, not a romance about a date.
- A slab is an opinion in plastic. The glossary has the numbers.
Proof Washington quarters exist for much of the clad run. This page does not invent a PR price grid — NGC did not print one in the 2026-08-23 sheet used here. The proof numbers live on the glossary.
Copper color designations (BN, RB, RD) do not apply here. Those belong on copper coins. See the Lincoln Wheat cent and the glossary.
Overview
A Washington quarter on this page is a United States quarter struck on John Flanagan’s portrait with the eagle reverse in copper-nickel clad from 1965 through 1998. Same portrait. Same eagle. The alloy changed in 1965.
Silver 1932–1964 — what people mean by pre-65 Washington quarters — lives on the pre-65 Washington quarter page.
People like Washingtons because they show up in jars. A worn clad quarter is usually face value plus a dealer’s time. They are also easy to ruin. A wiped coin looks “better” to a seller and worse to everyone else.
This page is a series article, not a shop listing.
History
Standing Liberty ends in 1930. Washington begins in 1932. In 1965 the circulating quarter becomes clad. The portrait stays. The alloy does not. That is not a key-date story. The eagle reverse lasts through 1998, except 1976. State quarters begin in 1999. Those tables live later.
This page will not invent a melt story that treats a 1965 quarter like silver.
Design
Obverse: Washington facing left, “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date. Reverse on this page: an eagle, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.” Look at the hair, the cheek, and the eagle’s breast. Those spots go flat first. Circulation strikes from 1965 through 1967 have no mint mark. 1965 clad is composition, not a grade.
People Also Ask
What years are Washington quarters on this page?
This page is the clad eagle reverse, 1965 through 1998. Silver 1932–1964 lives on the pre-65 Washington quarter page. This page does not duplicate that chart. 1976 used a different reverse and is not a row here. Later State, Territories, America the Beautiful, and American Women quarters get their own later pages.
How much is a Washington quarter worth?
It depends on the date, the mint mark, the alloy, and the grade. The G, VF, and MS-63 columns in the mintage chart are NGC guide values from 2026-08-23 for the clad type dates on this page, not an offer. Silver values live on the pre-65 page. A dealer looking at the actual coin will beat a guide number.
Are pre-1965 Washington quarters on this page?
No. Circulation Washington quarters through 1964 are 90 percent silver. Those years, mintages, and values live on the pre-65 Washington quarter page. This page does not duplicate that chart. Same design. Different melt.
Is 1965 a key date Washington quarter?
No. 1965 is the first clad year on this reverse. An alloy change is not a key date. 1932-D and 1932-S stay on the silver page.
What are the key date Washington quarters?
A PCGS article names 1932-D and 1932-S as the twin keys. Those names live on the pre-65 Washington page. This page will not invent a 1965 key around the alloy change.
Collector Considerations
Buy the coin, not the story. A pile of worn clad quarters is face value plus a dealer’s time. A pile of worn pre-65 quarters is often a melt conversation, and that chart lives on the pre-65 Washington quarter page.
If you inherited a jar, do not scrub the date. The coin dealer directory starts in Ohio.
For the silver years, read the pre-65 Washington quarter. For the quarter that came before the silver years, read the Standing Liberty quarter.
A Final Word
Washington quarters reward people who slow down. Read the date. Read the mint mark when there is one. Look at the hair and the eagle. Leave the polish under the sink. Do not call a 1965 quarter silver because the face looks the same.
When you want the silver years on this site, the pre-65 Washington quarter is already here.
